Age Friendly Hertfordshire:
Improving Transport
The Age Friendly: Live Better Transport Lead is working with partners across the county to help make transport more accessible, welcoming and age-friendly for older people. We are working with Intalink on bus shelter improvements, including supporting audits and encouraging age-friendly design for upgraded shelters, helping to improve the passenger experience, and with community transport providers to make local services more visible and easier to find.
We are developing the Chatty Bus initiative to help older adults feel more connected during their bus journeys, with volunteers helping to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere on selected services.
This work is ongoing, and we will continue to share updates as projects develop.
Getting Around Hertfordshire
Whether you’re travelling to appointments, shopping, social activities, or visiting friends and family, there are a range of transport options available across Hertfordshire.
Bus Travel
If you are of eligible age or have a qualifying disability, you may be entitled to a free bus pass which allows free off-peak travel on local buses. To apply for a bus pass please follow the link below.
Damaged, lost or stolen bus passes
It’ll cost £10 to replace your bus pass.
Contact the Concessionary Travel Team on 0300 123 4050 to pay over the phone.
It’s free if you have been issued a valid Crime Reference Number from the Police.

Rail Travel
Hertfordshire is served by several rail routes connecting towns and villages to London and surrounding counties.
Senior Railcard
The Senior Railcard offers discounted rail travel for eligible passengers. People with a Senior Railcard save on average £114 per year*, or £5.27 per journey.

Passenger Assist
If you need assistance when travelling by train, Passenger Assist allows you to request support for your journey, including help navigating the station, getting on or off the train, changing trains, or using a ramp. Assistance can be arranged for your whole journey, even when travelling across multiple train services.
You can book assistance through the Passenger Assist website or by calling 0800 022 3720. Assistance can also be requested at short notice, with train companies accepting requests up to 2 hours before your journey. You can also travel without booking in advance and ask a member of staff for assistance when you arrive at the station.

Community Transport
Community transport services can help people who find it difficult to access public transport.
These services may include:
- Dial-a-Ride schemes
- Volunteer driver services
- Accessible minibuses
- Group transport to community activities

Walking and Wheeling
For shorter journeys, walking or using mobility aids can be a healthy and convenient option.
Accessible Walking Routes in Hertfordshire
The Hertfordshire Health Walks programme offers free, volunteer-led walks across the county. Walks are graded to suit different abilities, including shorter and gentler options for people who may be less active or returning to walking after illness.
Accessible Countryside and Park Routes
Many parks and green spaces have surfaced paths suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and walking aids.
